Volunteers vow to fight back after yobs left 27 birds beheaded, a frog speared …

A community group left devastated after yobs massacred wildlife at a horticultural centre have vowed to carry on – and make sure some good comes out of the horrific attack.

The outrage at Wythenshawe Park left 27 birds beheaded, a frog speared, Koi carp poisoned and windows smashed.

But Friends of Wythenshawe Park members say they won’t let the incident tarnish the attraction – or their area.

Friends of Wythenshawe Park secretary, Joyzelle Kelsall, said they have been inundated with messages of support.

She said: “We’ve had a lot of people wanting to donate money and these have been gratefully received.

“It feels like the right moment to get proper support for the centre.

“The best we can do is try and move forward and hopefully something good can come of it.

“We’ve been having these kinds of problems for a long time and we need more security measures.

“We hope to replace the glass houses with polycarbonate so it’s not so fragile.”

They also intend to meet police to look into the possibility of CCTV – but are struggling to meet the cost of the equipment.

The break-in was the third at the park in just two weeks. Vandals previously wrecked 28 allotment plots.

Joyzelle said: “We can’t really afford proper CCTV.

“But, there are other systems less high-tech so if there are any firms out there who might be willing to sell us something at cost price that would be great.

“We know these things can’t be done overnight but the more members we have, the more support is visible.”

Coun Mike Amesbury said: “This horrifying incident has struck a chord both with the local community and further afield. We’ve had a massive response, both from Manchester residents and as far away as Wales.

“People have got in touch offering to help with donations of cash and birds.

“It shows what a valued resource the horticultural centre is and reminds us how the good-hearted, community-spirited majority far outweigh the sort of sick individuals who perpetrated this crime.”

Six teenagers, aged 13 to 18, have been arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft and criminal damage.
