“Chitthi Na Koi Sandesh, Jaane Wo Kaun Sa Desh Jahan Tum Chale Gaye….”. This is one of the famous songs of Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh, who passed away on Monday morning due to brain hemorrhage.
On this sad day, millions of hearts across the globe have been mourning his sudden demise.
Saddened over his death, everyone has just one question ” Kahan tum Chale Gaye”.
With his soulful voice, the ‘Ghazal King’ ruled the hearts of millions across the world. His melodious voice blended with feelings of pain and melancholy works like a medicine for many lonely and broken hearts.
Jagjit Singh took the ‘Ghazal’ singing to highest level and his songs are still admired by all age groups. The ‘King of Ghazal’ started his career in 70s, when there were several noted Ghazal Singers like Noor Jehan, Begum Akhtar, Talat Mahmood, Mehndi Hassan and Malika Pukhrah. However, his style of singing left timeless mark in the Music industry.
Jagjit Singh has given several hits numbers during his five decades long career. His popular hit numbers, which includes ‘Jhuki Khuki Si Nazar, Bekarar Hai Ki Nahi’ and ‘Kagaz Ki Kasti Wo Baris Ka Pani’, ‘Patta Patta Boota Haal Hamara jane hai’, ‘Honthon Se Choo Lo Tum Mera Geet Amar Kar Do’, ‘Ye Daulat V lel lo ye Sohrat V lelo, Bhale Mujhse Chin lo ye meri Jawani’, and ‘Tum Ko Dekha to Ye Khyal Aaya, Zindagi Dhoop Tum Ghana Saya’.
He produced 80 music albums during his singing career. His other popular ghazals are as following: ‘Pehle Har Cheez Thi Apni Magar Ab Lagta Hai Apne Hi Ghar Mein Kisi Doosre Ghar Ke Hum Hain’, Apni Marzi Se Kahan Apne Safar Ke Hum Hain’, ‘Tum itna jo muskara rahe ho Kya Ghum hai Jo Chipa Rahe ho’, ‘Chak Jigar ke C Lete hai’, ‘Hosh Walon ko Khabar Kya Bekhudi Kya Cheez hai’, and ‘Kal Chaudhvai ki Raat thi’.
Born to a Sikh Family in Sriganaganagr, Rajasthan on February 8, 1941, Jagjit Singh Jagjit learnt the nuances of music under a blind teacher, Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma. Later, he took lessions Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms under Ustad Jamal Khan of Sainia gharana for six-years.
Jagjit Singh always believe that Music is for inspiration not for competition.” If you bring competition in music, the soul is lost.”
Singh gave his last interview on September 23, 2011, when his concert was scheduled along with Ghulam Ali. However, the concert was cancelled after he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital same day.
After completing his graduation from DAV College in Jalandhar, he moved to Mumbai in 1961 to start his career as a playback singer. In 1970, he married famous singer Chitra.
At the time, when he was enjoying his golden period of singing, he suffered biggest tragedy of life when he lost his only son Vivek at the age of 18 in a car accident in 1990.
Soon after the death of son, wife Chitra forgotten singing and never returned to stage or studio for singing. However, a depressed father, recorded his first album “Man Jite Jagjit” after son’s death.
He was also honoured with Padmabhushan award in 2003. Jagjit Singh also sung the song written by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee– ‘Nayi Disha’ (1999) and ‘Samvedna’ (2002).
