If you have or want a Koi pond, you should know about the different varieties and are sorted according to their body patterns and color. They are scientifically known as Cyprinus Carpio and they started with only three main colors but because of cross-breeding, they are now available in many patterns and colors.
Some of the best known varieties are; the Utsurimono, Shusui, Hikarimoyo, Koromo, Hikarimuji, Kawarimono, Hikari Utsuri, Tancho, Asagi, Doitsu, Bekko, Gosanke, Kin Gin Rin, just to name a few.
The Gosanke are the most popular and Koi that fall into this category include the Showa, Kohaku and Sanke.Though most are white and red, some have black markings as well and the black is normally found on older species. The skin is very white and the red extends to the head with dark spots on the body.
The Sanke has more black spots than the Kohaki and the Showa has black skin with colored spots. The Bekko are homogeneously yellow, red or white. The yellow ones are called Ki Bekko, the white ones are called Shiro Bekko and the red ones are called Aka Bekko.
One of the most attractive Koi are the Utsurimono and there are 3 varieties; Hi, Ki and Shiro. They have black markings that normally extend from a yellow, red or white foundation. A deep black pattern is normally on the mouth, tail and fins. as per www.articlealley.com
The Asagi Koi are blueish-gray, which also has a pattern on it, on the outside and a prominent red on their sides. The Tancho are mostly white with a distinguishing red patch on its head. Hikarimono are a glossy metallic color. Their silver, gold or orange luminous bodies are known as Gold, Platinum and Orenji. Their head and fins are often faded.
Hikarimoyo are also a glowing color as the Platinum Kohaku is a white with bright red lines on its sides, the Yamabuki HariTwake has a pale yellow pattern, the Orenji is a Platinum Koi with orange markings, the Gin Bekko is a Metallic Bekko and the Yamato Nishiki is a Metallic Sanke.
