Seasonal Weather Brings Challenges To The Maintenance of Koi Ponds

Nothing is more beautiful than a koi pond in the summer! Koi ponds and gardens add value to your property and give you years of enjoyment.

Koi pond maintenance doesn’t consist of a lot. The task is simple, especially when it is biologically efficient.

During the winter months, pond pumps and filters should be maintained to winterize them for the snow and ice. When the temperature in your environment drops below 52 degrees, turn off the pump. The water will remain at a warmer temperature at the bottom, keeping fish warmer as well. The fish will stay warm enough to survive the cold and ice.

Testing the water quality in your koi pond is perfect in the winterization process. Collect fallen debris and leaves from the pond with a net. Use a pond test kit to test water in the pond for excess nitrates and ammonia levels.

If the water level is at a depth of three feet or more, the fish will survive and be find out in the pond. When water levels do not have a three foot depth, bring the goldfish, koi or tropical fish indoors. A device known as a “deicer” will allow a small portion of the pond to remain open, allowing the fish to have a warmer spot to settle in under.
