A virus new to the wild in Michigan was connected to a fish kill in June at Kensington Metropark, the Livingston County Daily Press Argus reported Thursday.
Koi herpesvirus was found in samples taken by the state Department of Natural Resources after 300 to 500 carp were found dead in the lake, the article said. There is no human health risk from the virus, which caused die-offs in Ontario in 2007 and 2008.
Experts at first thought the virus spring viremia was behind the fish kill, but tests found it was not involved.
The presence of the new virus is one reason why boaters are encouraged to clean boats, disinfect gear and not move live fish between bodies of water, the article said.
The DNR asks the public to report unusual fish kills at www.michigan.gov/fishing.
