Moyo- Type of pattern
Muji- Single color
Nezu- Gray color
Orenji- Orange color
Rin- Shiny scale
Shiro- White, relating only to the colored patches of the Koi
Sumi- Black, relating only to the colored patches of the Koi
Tancho- Single strong Red spot on the head only
Yamabuki- Pale Yellow form of the Ogon Metallic Koi
Not only is color high on the list of favorite attributes for Koi, but the quality of the Koi`s color must also be examined closely. The vibrancy of color is an indicator as to just how healthy the Koi is, for example, if the Black is a dull color, or the Orange or Red is anything but brilliant and the White is not Snow White, the Koi probably has poor health.
This can be caused by poor water quality and/or a poor diet. There are however, some Koi varieties that change color according to the change in water temperature, such as the Matsukawabake. You can provide dietary supplements to improve your Koi`s color.
Foods that have high concentrations of Carotenoid pigments are extremely beneficial and you can also try food supplements, like Spirulina, which is a Green algae, Plankton, Shrimp, Marigolds and Daphina. There are times when a Koi`s color are less than brilliant simply because the Koi has not reached it`s full potential as young Koi will usually look sort of dull during their early development. The initial concern should be on the perfection of the body shape and form, not improving the color. Once the Koi reaches a certain age, their colors begin to develop a more vibrant look.
A Koi`s colors can be enhanced by providing excellent quality living conditions, for example, water with a lot of green phytoplankton can help create strong Red and Yellow colors, enrich Black coloring with hard water that has a pH from 7.5 to 8.5.
