Price was advised by local pond builders to use ‘natural’ biological filters to keep his 60,000 gallon, 12 foot deep Koi pond crystal clear, but he was unsure about this. He and his wife, a veterinarian, set out on a one year build to have one of the most valuable Koi collections in the U.S. with crystal clear water and unique flora on the pond bottom.
The oval-shaped pond has a small peninsula in it so he can ring his liberty bell, to call the Koi when its feeding time and often feeds them by hand. The first system he had was a 30 GPM well water turbo system from ECOsmarte. It treated his home, irrigation and auto-fill needs for the pond. The natural oxygen and ionization chambers for the home resulted in .10 to .15 ppm residual copper going into his residence and the pond, on the replenishment water.
The residual was never measured in the main pond, more than likely due to the 2,900 lb. bubblehead biological filters. ECOsmarte recommended that Price put in 2 Zeolite filters, with an ECOsmarte Koi oxygen system to stop ammonia buildup that comes from the large Koi, which is harmful to the fish and the array of garden plants on the bottom of the pond.
The CO2 pH injection system from ECOsmarte was also needed to keep the pond from reaching the 8.0 pH that was in Price`s well, especially after daily feedings. The pH was kept at a 7.2 to 7.6 range with Carbon Dioxide injected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was backed up by a Sulphuric Acid Injector that kicked on by sensors, when the pH levels hit 7.5. as per http://larrycouture.articlealley.com
On a daily basis, the pond was at 80 to 90% clarity, but this was not good enough for Price, as the pond was developing string algae, periodically. With his wife`s help, he decided to introduce copper to the pond to remove the string algae and hopefully get to a 95 to 100% daily water clarity.
Price went from .10, .15, .20 and finally .25 ppm copper, but said that at .25 ppm, his fish were not happy, so he scaled it back it .15 ppm. This was enough to get rid of the algae and bring the clarity to almost a mirror quality. Price stated “The low level copper gives us a view of the black EPDM liner defects in areas the water garden struggles. It is a dramatic clarity!”
Although this is a huge Koi pond, the average Koi pond keeper can benefit from the scale control, O2 Oxygen controlling ammonia levels and the glass pack filter media that ECOsmarte has to offer. For more info, you can visit: www.ecosmarte.com or www.glasspackfilter.com
