What ‘Not To Do’ When Building Your Koi Pond

If you are building your first Koi pond, you should learn these ‘what-not-to-do`s’ first to make sure you are successful with your fishes. Remember a Koi pond is a permanent structure so be sure to build it to last.

First is to pick a place where the entire Koi pond will NOT be exposed to direct sunlight all the time as this will encourage green water algae.  It should not be in a completely shaded area either, so avoid putting it under or beside large trees.

Next is to keep in mind that Koi grow extremely large in no time. A full grown Koi can reach 36 inches in length and  have been known to grow even larger so you need to take into account how big your pond will be and how many Koi you will put in it.

One of the most common mistakes is a pond that is too shallow and these ponds make the Koi a sitting target for predators such as raccoons and herons, not to mention it is harder to maintain water temperature in a shallow pond. To solve these problems, your pond should be no less than 4 feet deep and the deeper, the better.

If you make the pond 6 feet deep or more, you can also have fish such as Bass, Sunfish and Blue gills, but they must have this deeper water so don`t attempt to keep these fishes with your Koi unless the water is at least 6 feet deep or they won`t survive!  as per www.articlealley.com

If you make the sides of the pond steep and smooth, it will help deter any predators that come around. You should always keep a quarantine tank set up in case you have any sick Koi.

Keep the pond shape simple, as in a square, round or rectangle-shape as they are the easiest to clean via the filter. You will need a high-quality filtration system, a ultraviolet sterilizer to kill algae, which will turn the water green, a pond aerator and heater.

You also need two bottom drains in the pond with mesh over them to keep turtles and other critters from getting sucked into them. You will need to do extensive research on your Koi pond before you start construction, to ensure your Koi stay healthy and happy. For more info, you can visit: http://Best-Pond-Reviews.blogspot.com
