LAGUNA WOODS – The Golden Rain Foundation community association in Laguna Woods Village approved spending more money—for a total cost of up to $79,200—to rebuild a koi pond in front of Clubhouse 1.
The GRF board voted 6-4 Tuesday in favor of increasing the budget by up to $34,200 to replace the pond in front of the clubhouse and make it larger. The new pond will be 84-square-feet larger than the current pond, said Lloyd Foster, chair of GRF’s Maintenance Construction Committee.
“In my opinion, it’s a waste of money,” said Director Burns Nugent. He said he did not think the increased size of the pond warranted the additional cost.
GRF previously set aside $141,000 to renovate the fountain in front of Clubhouse 1. The project was completed in December and included replacing fountain pumps, spray units, plumbing, lighting, re-plastering and installing tile in the fountain basin and refinishing the fountain wall.
In January, the board set aside $45,000 to rebuild the koi pond, which included demolition, construction, new pumps and filtration system and lights. The project was approved to make the pond consistent with the fountain.
The additional funds will be used to make the fountain larger and add decorative tile to the pond to match the newly-renovated fountain.
Pacific Landcrafters, the same company that completed the clubhouse fountain, will complete the koi pond renovations, Foster said.
