‘Accidental Drowning’ in Greenwich Leaves Child, Elderly Woman Dead [Video]

Greenwich Police have released more information about the elderly woman and a toddler who were found drowned Thursday morning at 12 Fox’s Ln.

“The victims had apparently drowned within a relatively small and shallow manmade Koi pond. Of note, the Koi pond was constructed with a low stone wall and fence enclosure, the total height of which is approximately 2 ½ feet tall,’ according to a statement released by police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray.

The victims were treated at the scene and brought to Greenwich Hospital where they were pronounced dead, Gray said.

“Members of the Greenwich Police Department Detective Division were detailed to the scene and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for June 17, 2011 with State of Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Our preliminary investigation indicates that this was a tragic accident,” according to the statement.

“No further descriptions or the names will be released pending the notification of the extended family,” Gray also said.

Update: 1:45 p.m.

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said the department received a 911 call at 10:54 a.m. Thursday and that when officers and ambulance personnel arrived, they found an older woman and a toddler boy in a shallow loi pond in the yard of 12 Fox’s Lane.

The victims have not been identified pending notification of relatives. Gray said that another elderly member of the family called 911. Fox’s Lane is a private, narrow driveway-like road next to 356 W. Putnam Ave., across from Greenwich BMW. Police said there are about a half-dozen buildings including multi-family residences on the lane.

Gray described the incident as “a tragic accident” and “likely an accidental drowning.”
